Summer school at La Meridiana School of Ceramics, Tuscany, Italy. 2012
Italy has always been a great getaway and as the land of ceramics it was a great opportunity for me to learn about the textures and techniques of a material as versatile as porcelain. The paperclay in porcelain and Raku firing courses were primarily experimental while teaching the tricks and important facts about the materials at hand.
Porcelain spoons
Interesting cuts from whole slabs of porcelain and scooping out space for holding food on the surface. Playing with forms and learning the shrinking rate for porcelain which is essential while designing any product that requires an ergonomic factor.
Raku fired napkin rings
Raku firing is one of the most interesting kinds because the result is always unknown. It used three elements - earth (soil), fire and water and the combination of these define the glaze finish which can never be a 100% same.
Simplifying the definition of a simple napkin ring while adding an element of playfulness and grace.
Porcelain Jewellery with metallic glazes, and form and texture
Jewellery pieces ranging from rings to earrings, to neck pieces. Playing with colour and form while exploring different metallic glazes and coloured slurry.
La Meridiana was the best place I've been to, not just only for the beautiful cypress trees and wine yards but because it truly brought be closer to myself and taught me that travelling alone is one of the best gifts you can give to yourself.
